Too much work and not enough of what we enjoy, along with what brings us peace, and what makes us better can keep us from accomplishing our most desired goals. This is why we must learn to live lives that are perfectly balanced to fit our specific needs. Balance is defined as:
#1 A distribution of weight enabling someone or something to remain upright and steady
#2 A conditions in which different elements are equal or in the correct proportions
#3 To keep or put something in a steady position so it doesn't fall.
Through use of the definitions listed above and a popular coaching tool, I’m going to guide you through a process that will help you work toward creating a balanced life. Our lives are complicated and have many different areas that must be tended to. In creating balance within our lives we must be aware of those different areas, and understand how we can tend to each of them. Before I get in to the process of how to create balance in your life, I’d like to focus on why having a balanced life is so important. Once you understand the benefits of why a balanced life is so important, you’ll be more determined to do the work it takes to achieve it.
Benefits of Balance
If you refer back to the #1 and #3 definitions of balance listed above, you will see that they suggest that having balance keeps us stable: firm and not likely to break or fall apart. It also helps us to keep performing at a high level for an extended period of time, instead of performing at a high level and then quickly burning ourselves out after only a short time. If we live a balanced life, we will also experience less incidents of stress, overwhelm and burnout. We’ll have more opportunities to destress, have fun, connect with friends, family and experience the things we enjoy. Living a balanced life will benefit us in many areas including:
Health
Relationships
Self-Improvement
Career
Social Life
Spirituality
How to Create Balance

The 2nd definition suggests that we should tend to each area of our lives as needed. We do not necessarily have to give each area an even amount of attention, because each area may require a different amount. But we have to figure out what each area needs and give it the appropriate amount of attention. I encourage you to use The Wheel of Life to determine in what areas of your life you need to make changes to create a balance.
A copy of the Wheel of Life is displayed here and a printable copy can be found here. The Wheel of Life includes 8 areas that most of us find important in our lives. Feel free to cross out an area and replace it with something that may be more important to you. Once you’ve got your Wheel of Life in front of you, go around the wheel and rate each area on a scale of 1-10 in regards to how satisfied you are with that section ( 1= it couldn’t be worse & 10= it’s perfect and couldn’t be better).
Once you’ve rated each area answer the questions listed below to help you determine how you can use your results to help you create a more balanced life. Please note that having balance does not necessarily mean that the numbers need to be the same in each area. Balance in the Wheel of Life, is having whatever set of numbers you need in each area to keep you feeling fulfilled and moving forward toward success without stress or burnout.
